Winemaking: Grapes come from the vineyard that is hand harvested later, almost at the end of November. In addition to a vineyard sorting, clusters were selected by hand in the cellar, gently desstemmed, jack-stems removed by hand and placedin 2 ton stainless steel square tanks and 600 liter open barrels for fermentation. Fermentation was long and slow, with a maceration of about 35-40 days. Later, the drop wines were transferred to the same barrels and aged during 18 months. The remaining skins, so matured, were pressed very gently to obtain a high content of mature polysaccharides, responsables of its  great volume in mouth, very characteristic among all of MELIS wines, a symbol of our winemaking style. 100%  of the wine was aged in French oak burgundy barrels and later bottled without any clarification or filtration.

Characteristics: Melis  presents a deep dark purple colour with beautiful flower aromas, expressing the extreme maturation of Grenache, blackberry, tobacco and violets, as well as mineral notes that come from the slate soil  (“licorella”) of our vineyard. The palate is full and powerful, with a silky  texture balanced by fine  tannins and polysaccharides providing a long finish. We recommend decanting this wine between 45 and 60 minutes before tasting.

Discovery Story: Absent from the U.S. market for over 10 years, we’re excited to rediscover and share the wines of Melis. The Melis is a “Village Wine”; all grapes were grown on the Melis Estate in the Priorat village of Torroja. The farming is organic; the fermentation open-topped and natural; unfiltered and unfined; no added sulfites. This wine represents the smooth and harmonious expression of the Priorat terroir and its rich, ripe fruit -- intermingled with the wild, savory mineral accents of licorella.
